This Yoga Alliance Registered Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training program is a practical training designed to make you a confident and effective Ashtanga Yoga Teacher - for all levels of students.

The demand for qualified yoga teachers is growing internationally. This Certificate course could be used as a stepping stone to teaching yoga internationally.

The training provides a solid foundation of knowledge and information with which you can confidently and effectively begin to facilitate yoga classes for beginners or intermediate students.

Some participants will join to simply experience a month of immersion and exploration of yoga rather than as a means to teaching others.
It will involve intensive practice of pranayama, asana, seated and walking meditation.

 

Theory will involve; Anatomy and Physiology for yoga, a grounding in yoga philosophy and an exploration of its relevance to your own daily life.

Your Course Outline:
 

History and Philosophy

  • This part will be facilitated by Aldi Groenewald
    (Bsc Psychology)

  • History - The legacy of T. Krishnamacharya

  • The eight limbs of Patanjali

  • History of Ashtanga Yoga.

  • An overview of yoga philosophy.

Pranayama

  • Ujjayi Breath - theory and practice.

  • Technique of  Nadi Shodana Pranayama, Viloma, Kumbhaka

Asanas

  • Suryanamaskara A and B - theory and practice.

  • Names (sanskrit and english)

  • Principles of safe and healthy alignment

  • Asanas of the Primary Series and Second Series

  • Simplified modifications of asanas for beginners or injured yoga students.

  • Therapeutic benefits of the asanas.

  • Sequencing for classes.

  • Full Primary Series

  • Modified Primary Series

Anatomy And Physiology

  • - Muscle groups and there function in yoga asana.

  • - Applied anatomy for treatment of common injuries.

  • - Posture  analysis.

  • - Anatomy of breathing

Naulis/ Bandhas

  • Names and functions

  • Naulis - theory and practice

  • Bandhas - theory and practice

Teaching Techniques

  • Principles of teaching

  • Etiquette/ responsibility and a code of conduct for teachers

  • Effective Verbal instruction.

  • Hands-on adjustments.

Yoga for special conditions Including prenatal yoga.
Marketing yourself as a teacher

 

 REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION:

  • MINIMUM 90% ATTENDANCE OF ALL TRAINING SESSIONS

  • A&P EXAM

  • 1 PHILOSOPHY ESSAY (700 – 1000 Words)

  • 1 BOOK REVIEW ( 500 Words)

  • GENERAL ASSESSMENT BY COURSE FACILITATORS

PART TIME COURSE SCHEDULE 

 

  1. The venue for all of these sessions will be Karmashala yoga studio in 117 Hatfield St,  Gardens.
     

  2. Please note that at the moment the dates for the weekend retreat in August has not yet been confirmed. You will be informed as soon as possible of confirmation or a change.
     

  3. There will be one non–residential weekend retreat on the first weekend in June. It will consist of Saturday from 11h00 till 17h30 and then Sunday from 09h00 till 17h30.
     

  4. In addition to these times you will have to find time to:
    a)   Attend at least 10 general classes taught by Jim Harrington or an approved teacher.  
    b)
       Observe and Assist at least 8 classes taught by Jim Harrington or an approved teacher.  
    c)
        ATTEND AT LEAST ONE YOGA SYNERGY COURSE (Cost is not included in the TEACHER TRAINING fees but teacher trainees will receive a 20% discount on courses during the program) 
    d)
       Practice teach and report on at least 5hrs of classes. These may be your own private students, general classes at another studio or community classes of the community outreach program.
     

  5. ON COMPLETION, YOU WILL BE AWARDED A CERTIFICATE AND BE  QUALIFIED TO JOIN YOGA ALLIANCE AS A REGISTERED YOGA TEACHER (RYT-200HR). For more information on the Yoga Alliance see www.yogaalliance.org.
     

  6. ASSESMENT AND CERTIFICATION WILL BE BASED ON COMPLETING THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.

  • Attendance at minimum 90% of contact hours

  • Presentation on Yoga Philosophy

  • Written assignment on yoga philosophy (700 -1000 words)

  • Book report (500 words)

  • Exam for Anatomy and Physiology

  • Research project Anatomy and physiology (1000 -1500 words)

  • Practical teaching exam

  • General assessment by the course facilitators

You may undertake the training only to explore deeper levels of yoga practice and deepen your understanding, rather than as a career move.
