The simple concept of Karma, (which means cause and effect) is a guiding principle. Any action or occurrence will create or influence other actions or occurrences. It is ultimately about taking responsibility for all of our actions.
I don’t believe in using Karma as an excuse for bad luck or misfortune. Our karma is determined by how we respond to good or bad fortune that comes our way. We cannot influence the weather or other external actions that happen in our world, but we can certainly take responsibility for our attitudes and thought responses to them.
Past lives and future incarnations are out of our field of influence anyway. Instant karma in the present moment is the only thing that we have direct control over, so it’s worth observing.
If each thought is a karma loaded action, and we do a lot more thinking than we do anything else, then clearly we create our Karma from moment to moment according to our constant mental activity. The more thoughts of ill will, or fear that we have the more the mind gets into the habit of creating such thoughts. The more optimistic, creative and positive thoughts, the more the mind will tend to think that way and that will become reality.
This sense of responsibility to determine our own Karma is what ensures the professional conduct of KarmaCalmer practitioners. They know that what goes around comes around.
The Founder of KarmaCalmer
Jim Harrington is an Australian from Sydney based in Cape Town.
Jim’s Yoga background is 19 years of practice, exploration, and teaching. Initially, Jim was drawn to yoga in the 1980’s through his surfing addiction, to stretch out, re-align and to heal injuries sustained in the ocean.
Since the first trip to India at the tender age of 21 his yoga practice has been influenced by the Iyengar and Ashtanga Styles, the more medical Synergy style as well as other mind/body disciplines of Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung.
He still hasn’t completely overcome the surf addiction, and dashes out to ride the chilly Atlantic waves in between teaching, massaging and being a doting father and husband.
Jim Harrington was the Senior Teacher and Teacher Trainer at the Moksha Yoga studio in Cape Town for four years. He has introduced several hundred beginners to the practice of yoga and continues to play a mentoring role to the New Teachers who have graduated from his courses.
He is an internationally recognized IYA (Yoga Alliance) Teacher Trainer, and conducts Workshops and courses in Anatomy and Physiology for Yoga teachers and practitioners.
